Annual meeting recap
Dewes elected 15th president of CRA
John Dewes of Walnut Creek, Calif., has begun serving a one-year term as the 15th president of the Chevron Retirees Association (CRA). He assumed that post July 1, after being unanimously elected May 20 by the delegates attending the organization's 30th annual meeting in Atlanta, Ga.
For the past two years, Dewes has been the area vice president for Northern California/Hawaii (comprising 13 chapters) and the organizing chair for the Association's 2002 annual meeting in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dewes completed his 32-year Chevron career in 1995 by retiring in San Francisco as the Public Affairs general manager of State and Local Relations.
At the CRA's annual dinner banquet on May 21, Chevron Chairman Dave O'Reilly, the dinner's keynote speaker for the second consecutive year (see related stories), congratulated Dewes and the outgoing two-term president W. Roy Adams of Lindale, Texas.

Three other Chevron Corp. executives spoke at the CRA meeting: Scott Swasey, general manager of Benefits Planning and Administration; Jack Coffey, Public Affairs general manager of State and Local Relations; and Don Walker, manager of Business Coordination for Marketing's Retail Sales-East. A fourth guest speaker was Walter Roessing, Encore managing editor. They spoke to the delegates representing the Association's 85 chapters in the United States and western Canada. Among that total were 27 new chapter presidents.
Three new area vice presidents were introduced at the business meeting: Bob Bauer, Northwest U.S./Alaska; Elva Criss, Canadian; and Bill Leney, Northern California/Hawaii. Unable to attend was Bob Ingram, Gulf.

Seven other retirees are serving added one-year terms as area vice presidents: Mary Lou Baugher, Southern California; Ray Dively, North Atlantic Seaboard; Dee Moscou, Intermountain; Jerry Powers, Midwest; Bob Olmstead, South Atlantic Seaboard; Bill Merkel, Texas/Oklahoma; and Stan Gadzinski, Unaffiliated.
A conference highlight was the summaries presented on the next three annual meetings, all in mid-May. Sharing the rostrum were Dewes for 2002 in the San Francisco Bay Area, Merkel for 2003 in Oklahoma City and Hugh Gaudet for the recently announced 2004 confab in Calgary -- the first such gathering to be held outside the United States.
In other business, the delegates approved two resolutions:
- Responsibilities previously assigned to the Public Affairs Committee will be split between that group and a new Communications Committee. That will increase the CRA's standing committees from six to seven.
- Nominating Committee representation will better reflect the director membership groups and demography.
Chairing the Association's first-ever meeting in Atlanta was Bob Olmstead. Significant support in planning and staging the conference were Host Committee members Sue Shepherd, president, Atlanta Chapter; James Holcomb, president, Chevron-Gulf Retirees/Atlanta Chapter; and Merrill Grennor, former president, Atlanta Chapter.
Some 200 men and women participated in various aspects of the annual meeting program.
